Carpet beetles are a common household pest in New Zealand, often found in homes, warehouses, and museums. They feed on natural fibers like wool, silk, fur, feathers, and even pet hair—making carpets, rugs, clothing, and upholstery ideal targets. The adult beetle is small (3–5mm), dark brown to black, and typically appears in spring or early summer, often seen near windows.
These pests usually enter homes through cracks, vents, or utility lines and lay eggs on or near natural fiber materials. Once hatched, the larvae—recognizable by their bristled, carrot-shaped bodies—do most of the damage.
While not dangerous to humans or pets, their larvae can occasionally cause skin irritation.
